VIKRAM VEDHA (2017)

Critic - No.120 Director:  Pushkar-Gayathri Casts:  R.Madhavan, Vijay Sethupathi, Kathir, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Shraddha Srinath, Prem Music:  Sam C.S Language:  Tamil Genre:  Crime / Mystery / Thriller Plot:   ‘Vikram Vedha’ is a cat and mouse chase of conscience between a loyal police officer and dreaded gangster. Review: Pushkar-Gayathri is a director duo that sparked off the new age film making through their whacky treatment in ‘ Oram Po’ back in 2007. I believe that they gave two films that had all the potential to become a game changer in Kollywood. However, the reception for new age films was relatively lower during 2007-2010, a time where masala biggies were dominating. Cut to 2017, the duo strikes back with an exciting combination and concept that has made the right noise this time from the very first announcement. The film opens u

DUNKIRK (2017)

Critic - No.119 Director:  Christopher Nolan Casts:  Fionn Whitehead,Tom Glynn Carney, Jack Lowden, Harry Styles, Tom Hardy, Cilliam Murphy, MarkRylance Music:  Hans Zimmer Language:  English Genre:  Action / Drama / History Plot:   Allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire and France are surrounded by the German army and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War II. Review: After an experimental last entry, ‘Interstellar (2014)’ , the contemporary auteur, Christopher Nolan is back with a story rooted to the hearts of many who were affected by the Dunkirk incident during the World War II. The significant historical moment is told in a gripping way with more personal moments than a grand scale war spectacle. By dividing the story into three parts (mole, sea and air), Nolan packs unpredictable turns and emotional peaks that converge into a

SPIDER-MAN:HOMECOMING (2017)

Critic - No.118 Director:  John Watts Casts: Tom Holland , Michael Keaton, Robert Downey Jr ., Marisa Tomei , Jon Favreau Language: English Genre:   Action / Adventure / Sci-Fi Plot: Peter Parker, with the help of his mentor Tony Stark, tries to balance his life between an ordinary high school student in New York City and his superhero alter ego Spider-Man when a new threat arises. Review: We have seen many versions and takes on depicting the neighbourhood superhero, but this one might be the most relatable of all. Despite having no grand plot, ‘Spider-man: Homecoming’ is pumped up with some energetic presentation, one which might show the real, authentic ‘spidey’. Like all the other Spider-man franchises, the film walks on the line, ‘with great power lies great responsibility’. But the freshness lies on the way it is treated here with no sign of pretentious

OKJA (2017)

Image
Critic - No.117 Director:  Bong Joon Ho Casts: Ahn Seo-Hyun, Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano, Byun Hee-Bong, Giancarlo Esposito, Shirley Henderson, Steven Yeun, Lily Collins Language: English / Korean / Spanish Genre:   Action / Adventure / Drama Plot: Mija risks everything to prevent a powerful, multi-national company from kidnapping her best friend - a super pig named Okja. Review: Boon Joon Ho is one of the filmmakers who contribute heavily to popular cinema with his successful filmography that impacts widespread of global audience. His balance of melodrama, visual grammar and his pick of societal issues make his films relevant worldwide. ‘Okja’ adds to the winning streak of the filmmaker as he addresses about animal cruelty, corporate responsibilities and meat consumption threaded with a strong tasteful melodrama. There are visual and thematic

AS I'M SUFFERING FROM KADHAL (2017)

Critic - No.116 Director:  Balaji Mohan, Casts: Balaji Mohan, Sundar Ramu, Dhanya Balakrishna, Baby Yuvina, Nakshathra Nagesh, Sanath Reddy, Abishek Joseph George and Sanjana Music:  Satish Raghunathan Language:  Tamil Genre:  Romance / Comedy Running Time: 22-25 mins (10 episodes) Plot:   Set in urban Chennai, this mockumentary cum web series tells the story of four couples negotiating the perceptual meanings of modern-day love. Review: Balaji Mohan has always been a live wire of innovation right from his first flick. In fact he was one of the first few young filmmakers who started the new age trend, giving the industry a different direction. If ‘Kadhalil Sothapuvadhu Eppadi (2012)’ introduced mockumentary genre to Tamil cinema, ‘Vaayai Moodi Pesavum (2014)’ was a bold satire told in a backdrop of quirky, fantasy-based screenplay. But what made him stand in the big lea
